The Fence - [HTRA063]

If something slips out of balance/out of alignment/out of accord, when nothing seems to be as it should be, how does it return to its original state?

An uneven weight, a compressed spring, a stretched string: once released, they settle back toward equilibrium? I do not think in quite the same way. Since listening and understanding a musical work belong to the listener, and reflection and interpretation belong to the critic, I will refrain from further explanation.

The Fence, written for Shaghayegh Bagheri (soprano) and programmed Csound, is shaped with an awareness of the listener: much of its sonic language draws on the more consonant and lyrical characteristics of gousheh Hesar within dastgāh-e Chahārgāh (a modal system in Persian classical music).

The lyrics are inspired by excerpts from Shafi‘i Kadkani’s ghazal, Dar Hesar-e Shab (“In the Enclosure of Night”). The electronic part of this work is programmed in Csound; If you hear a sound resembling the human voice, it is not a recording; it is synthesized using the waveform characteristics of the human voice.

Shaghayegh Bagheri is a singer, improviser, vocal coach, and poet whose work bridges classical music, contemporary vocal practices, and experimental performance. Known for her expressive depth and sensitivity to microtonality, she creates performances that intertwine storytelling, improvisation, and cross-cultural musical traditions. Through her

multidisciplinary practice, she explores voice, identity, memory, and cultural exchange.

Kasra Faridi is a Toronto-based composer and pianist working at the intersection of contemporary classical and electronic music. In addition to his work as a classical pianist, his practice engages non-Western musical systems alongside experimental approaches to notation, timbre, and form, including the use of unconventional notation, computational sound, and Csound programming. With a background in physics and advanced training in piano, his work is informed by both analytical and intuitive processes. He is also active in interdisciplinary collaboration, and the development of new approaches to musical structure and representation.
